This is just excellent. I went to Iran in 2019, and I agree strongly with many of your observations, such as this: "the American flag displayed alongside the other flags of the world in a Yazd hotel, or the fact that Orwell’s 1984 was one of most popular books being sold on Tehran’s street corners." We have seen the same places which I recognize on the photos, and we have shared the feeling of well-educated, advanced, modern society - injustly put into the long years of isolation, and now war. Thank you for this beautiful essay. It is a testament to Iranians' resilience and a beacon of hope that Iran will come out of this dark time too.
