"I was in charge of Library of Congress sections B through D, covering philosophy, psychology, religion, and history." Aargh I'm so envious (in a good way!). Brilliant article. For some reason it made me think of the 2011 Israeli film Footnote, although The Name of the Rose is the more likely cultural reference. At any rate, there are very few greater pleasures in life than physical books.

Great post...and your experience of being a student deeply involved in a library and then teaching students who have never used them mirrors mine. (Though I expect as professional historians we were probably outliers then too.)

UVA’s gut renovated library is due to open in January, so that’s a good excuse for me to send them to the stacks to find a book. Plus the class is on the history of technology in the US, so I can connect it to information storage and retrieval technologies!
